House, released in November 2004, is currently on its fourth series in the US. It follows the exploits of maverick medical genius Dr Gregory House, and his team of fellowship diagnosticians. The premise of the show is that each week a patient is admitted to Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital (New Jersey) with a set of bizarre symptoms which quickly deteriorate, that the team must race against the clock to piece together to save the patient's life.
House's original team, from the first three series, consisted of neurologist Eric Forman, intensivist Robert Chase and immunologist Allison Cameron. As well as this, the Dean of Medicine, Lisa Cuddy, is usually closely involved with House's cases. House's friend, James Wilson, an Oncologist, is always around for consults and to bear the brunt of House's grievances and concerns.

At the beginning of the fourth series, House was left to pick a new team after Forman and Cameron resigned, and he fired Chase. Under pressure from Wilson and Cuddy, he eventually selected forty of the applicants for the fellowship positions, and has been gradually whittling down the hopefuls to an elite team of three or four.

House MD has won many accolades - most notably an Emmy for the writing of the episode Three Stories, in season 1. It was nominated as best TV Show of the Year in 2005 by the American Film Institute, and has won a Peabody Award for Hugh Laurie's portrayal of an 'unorthodox lead character' - which has also lead to House gaining critical acclaim as the most distinctive new medical drama of the last decade. Hugh Laurie has also won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Drama (2006 and 2007) and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Male Actor in a Drama Series
